Seven good things in life

March 4, 2008 · 1 Comment

Many thanks to Paul Linford for the tag, although my brain at this time of night is not at its most witty or incisive.  Anyway, here goes:

1. Criticising Labour: to be honest, I do it so often on this blog that I almost consider it to be a hobby, but it’s still a good thing.

2. Lovely girlfriend: what can I say, I have excellent taste in women.

3. Scuba diving in tropical waters: I simply haven’t done it enough, but it is the most relaxing holiday pursuit imaginable.  Nothing like swimming around in crystal clear water and looking for interesting wildlife.

4. Ham and cheese sandwiches: I just can’t help myself.

5. Live sport: I’ve always loved watching England in most of the big sports, and I just saw Arsenal stuff AC Milan which has put me in an excellent mood.

6. Green spaces in London: seeing as they are so rare, it’s nice to go for a stroll in them every so often.

7. David Attenborough: his work is nothing short of brilliant, I’m loving his new series and he is quite simply a legend.

That’s seven from me.  Now it’s the turn of Ordovicius, Mutley, Grendel, An Englishman’s Castle, Asquith, Man In A Shed and Iain Dale.

Dr Rowan Williams can shove it up his….

February 8, 2008 · 4 Comments

Dear Devil’s Kitchen,

As a regular reader of your blog I am fairly used to the colourful language that you use.  However, your description of the unbelievably stupid remarks by Dr Rowan Williams about Sharia Law was the first time when I’ve actually felt like using the same language as you.

Like everyone else, I’m used to him making pointless remarks about domestic and international affairs but he really has topped himself this time.  Allowing Muslims to be treated differently by the courts, regardless of the case details, would be a huge travesty for this country and a serious assault on British values.  For him to say that he thinks it is “a bit of a danger” that “there’s one law for everybody and that’s all there is to be said, and anything else that commands your loyalty or allegiance is completely irrelevant in the processes of the courts” shows how little he represents the views of this country, let alone other Christians - which is why I can understand the speed at which you flew off the wall in your blog post.

Will Dr Williams finally be booted out of his job and replaced by a more sensible, rational figure?  Who knows.  I have a sneaking suspicion I know what your view on his resignation would be, though….

Yours sincerely,

A.Tory

News on what Recess Monkey has been up to

November 21, 2007 · No Comments

Dear Recess Monkey,

It was only a few days ago that I sent you a letter asking what the reasons were behind the apparent lack of political debate and useful content on your blog.  Now I found have my answer - apparently you have been spending time looking at young girl’s profiles on Facebook.  Charming.

In your defence, you were only doing it for ‘research purposes’ - so that’s alright, then.

Yours sincerely,

A.Tory

Recess Monkey is on blogging recess, clearly

November 8, 2007 · 5 Comments

Dear Recess Monkey,

What on earth is going on?  I thought you were supposed to be one of, if not THE premier left-of-centre blogger that this country has to offer.  Recent evidence suggests that your reputation is not thoroughly deserved.

Your last three posts, which took you over a week to write in any case, have all just ended up as lame jokes that no-one finds particularly funny and hardly contributes to political debate.  This comes hot on the tails of a post a couple of weeks back where you made a rather teenage-esque comment about the position of an exhaust pipe on a bus advertisement (very incisive analysis - no, really).  Just a week earlier, you had made a sick joke about Ming Campbell and Madeleine McCann that was rightly panned by your commenters, myself included.  I think humorous posts in the blogosphere are always good to see, but evidently you and I have a very different sense of humour.

Lots of people have noted the relative strength of centre-right bloggers at present, and quite frankly if you’re the best opposition they’ve got it’s no wonder they are always ahead.  Maybe you’re just too busy to worry about your site at the moment, or maybe your powers of analysis need recharging - whatever the reason, your blog is suffering a slow and painful demise.

Yours sincerely,

A.Tory
