Dear William Hague,
I fear that the Conservative bid for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty will come crashing down today. Your efforts have been appreciated by everyone who believes in democratic principles and who cares about the future of this country, but it won’t be enough.
My prediction for today’s vote is relatively simple: a few Labour MPs will defy the Government, as will a few Lib Dem MPs. However, the majority of Lib Dems will bottle it and abstain to make sure that they don’t upset Clegg, who has clearly lost control of his own party. The Conservatives will vote for a referendum, save for a few dissenters who might abstain or vote with the Government. Overall, I predict a comfortable win for the Government, shortly followed by Gordon Brown announcing that we should ‘draw a line’ underneath this issue and ‘move on’.
It is hard to decide whether Labour or the Lib Dems will come out of this looking worse, as both parties have deceived the British public and flouted their written word to hold a referendum. They can lie to us as many times as they like about whether the Treaty is the same as the old constitution, but your services to the Conservatives are a credit to you and I have no doubt that your continued assault on our disgraceful governement will help us win the next election.
Yours sincerely,
A.Tory

The Lib Dems will come out looking worse, perhaps if Clegg had given them a free vote he could have claimed some small crumbs of victory

The Lib Dems must be holding their heads in their hands over this. It was a great opportunity to show strength and unity, embarrass the Government and show the public that they mean business - and just look where they’ve ended up.
Bring back Charles, they cry!

There should have been a free vote, yes.
But I’ll be staying loyal to Clegg.

Well, you maybe staying loyal but it looks like quite a few Lib Dem MPs won’t be.
For example, Health spokeswoman Sandra Gidley told the BBC: “Rightly or wrongly, my constituents will perceive that I have broken a promise I made at the last election if I do anything other than vote in support of a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty” so will be voting against it. Well done that lady!!!

That is very noble, but only the Captain is obliged to go down with the ship

I would be over the moon it someone would do us all a favour and sink Gordon Brown. However I would like the rest of us to stay afloat, complete with our own navy and not a Euro boat in sight of our territorial waters.
